Mr. Wang Sheng, Deputy Chief of Mission and Political Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus, met with Mr. Yiotis Ioannides, Vice President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee, on April 23, 2021 and discussed on the Beijing Winter Olympics and China-Cyprus sport cooperation.
Counsellor Wang briefed the preparatory work for the Beijing Winter Olympics, saying that the Chinese government and people have the passion, confidence, and capability to successfully host the Beijing Winter Olympics, and will make it a simple, safe and wonderful sport event based on the concepts of a green, inclusive, open, and clean game. He believed that Cyprus, as the inheritor of the ancient Greek Olympic spirit, will resolutely oppose the clamor of certain countries and anti-China forces to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics, as well as firmly oppose the politicalization of sports. This year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Cyprus diplomatic ties, we hope it will serve to further expand and deepen the sport cooperation between the two countries.
Mr. Yiotis Ioannides highly appreciated Beijing's concepts of hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics, and made it clear that the Cyprus Olympic Committee fully supports the Beijing Winter Olympics, and is preparing to send a strong delegation to participate. Cyprus always opposes the politicalization of sports and believes that the Olympic spirit is originally aimed at promoting the solidarity and cooperation of mankind. The Cyprus Olympic Committee stands ready to increase sport exchanges and cooperation with China, and is happy to join the celebration of the 50th anniversary of China-Cyprus diplomatic ties.
Counsellor Wang also visited the Cyprus Olympic House to learn about the history of Olympic Games and Cyprus' achievements, and viewed the 2008 Beijing Olympic torch, the mascots "Fuwa" and other exhibits with great interest.
